Imagine this with a panelled rather than gathered 'skirt'. In either dark red thick stretch or grey stretch denim (I am trying stash reduction thoughts here). Either would make a sassy travel coat.

Oh yes, I think it will be uber sassy in red, but you should make the grey too.
